Business, Blogging and Trees? Where’s the Thread
Posted March 12th, 2009 by tinaI’m at a technology seminar today. I’ve been to sessions on networking, podcasting and now blogging. There are some really great presenters here and lots of product demos if you want to walk around a bit. Julie Roads, owner of Writing Roads (copywriting for print and web), did a fantastic job talking about Blogging for Business at Geek Girls in Boston today.

Trees Grow & Blogging Too
Many people are just starting to explore what blogging is all about. Others have made the decision but aren’t sure how to get started. I heard a wonderful analogy, a way to picture your blog and how to grow it, that I had to share.
Your blog’s theme or topic is the tree trunk!
The sample theme in the seminar was Cape Cod (Massachusetts). The branches of the tree are topics like restaurants on Cape Cod, beaches, hotels and rental properties as Cape Cod is famous as a New England vacation destination.
Everyone interprets “words” differently, as we each have different backgrounds and different goals, both professional and business. Here are some more great ways to help you think about blogging, and how you can use it to grow your business.
- Blogs are built to grow, with the flexibility to support your business growth
- Each branch of your tree represents some aspect of your business, and you want to grow lots of branches
- Using my handyman business, branches might include carpentry, painting, tile and grout, … to decks, customer closets, bathroom remodels and so much more
- There may be 100s of other businesses that do what you do, but you are unique and blogging is a great way to show how you’re different from your competition
- Blogs let you share(free) lots of great information with your customers, and they’ll remember you when they need more in depth information or services that you offer
